- CDS is the twin spectrometer, operating in the extreme ultraviolet range (151 - 785 ≈). Only one is used at any point in
- time.
-
- NIS (Normal Incidence Spectrometer) is stigmatic. It makes use of a toroidal grating system to image long, thin slits on
- a 2-dimensional detector. With NIS one can build up an image of a portion of the Sun in all lines which one chooses to
- telemeter to the ground.
-
- GIS (Grazing Incidence Spectrometer) is astigmatic. It uses a pinhole slit and the spectrum can be collected
- simultaneously from four detectors.
-
- CDS computer controlled telescope splits ultraviolet light into its constituent parts using a state-of-the-art optical
- system, With CDS one can examine gas temperatures, densities and winds, as well as determine what the gases are
- made up of. CDS is effectively building up weather maps of the Sun's atmosphere.
